Sir Jim Ratcliffe completes Manchester United part-takeover in a £1.3BILLION deal with the Glazer family for 25 per cent ownership
The Glazers monopoly of Manchester United has been broken following the completion of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s 25 per cent stake in the Premier League giants. The British billionaire has finally seen his £1.3billion deal been ratified to get involved in matters at Old Trafford.  As part of the move Ratcliffe, 71, will take control of football operations as the boyhood United fan bids to restore the…

veilguard gameplay spoilers:
okay I looked at the article 😭 I want to know enough to make an informed decision as a consumer but little enough to have fun speculating; combat news is allowed
maybe it'll make more sense when we start seeing later-game content but three active skills + being down a companion + companion skill progression being intrinsic to bond advancement feels like a step backwards

SUBLIME CINEMA #681 - THE ZONE OF INTEREST
An audacious masterpiece that hasn't left me since I've seen it, and has only grown more fearsome in my mind the longer I've sat with it.
Jonathan Glazer is one of the most courageous filmmakers around right now, approaching his subjects in ways most directors wouldn't dare to. He has long had all the means to take on a 'normal' career making 'normal' movies, but has rejected it in lieu of refining his art and craft - making these increasingly probing, personal and left field films - at a rate of once every ten years.
Under the Skin was one of my best theatrical experiences, and Zone is even more relevant, conjuring much of the same atmosphere, of dread and of horrors unseen.

THE ZONE OF INTEREST (2023): Extremely disquieting, politically pointed statement about bourgeoisie complicity in ongoing, monstrous evil, written and directed by Jonathan Glazer based on a Martin Amis novel about Rudolph Höss (Christian Friedel), commandant of the Auschwitz concentration camp, whose family lives in comfort and comparative luxury in a big house nearby.
There's little plot per se — the biggest conflict in the story is Höss's wife Hedwig (Sandra Hüller) insisting on staying at Auschwitz with the children while he's reassigned to another camp, unwilling to relinquish her easy country lifestyle and Polish slaves even for a little while — and the film maintains a rigid and frosty emotional distance from its own narrative. (If you're not familiar with Höss's biography, the film makes no particular effort to fill you in.) Many scenes are filmed primarily in long shot, and always framed in ways that avoid ever letting the viewer get a good look at any of the characters. Similarly, the script only occasionally alludes to the war and the ongoing program of mass murder and enslavement in which Höss is participating (and which he regards as an interesting engineering problem as well as a career opportunity), although it's very clear that the characters, including the children, know exactly what's going on and are just fine with it: In a moment of frustration, Hedwig takes out her frustration on their terrified Polish house slave, casually warning the girl, "I could have my husband scatter your ashes over the fields of Babice."
The result is a discomfiting atmosphere of sustained, agonizing dramatic irony, full of tableaux of quietly playing children and SS officers indulging in fits of contextually absurd sentimentality about dogs, horses, and the pretty view, while remaining completely dispassionate about the staggering horror they're perpetrating and on which their families' pleasant little idyll is built. In very short order, you'll want to scream (and, if you have any human feeling at all, probably to see them all hanged), but the story withholds dramatic catharsis of any kind. There are no scenes of heroic resistance, no 11th-hour crises of conscience, no arrival of Allied liberation, and no assurance of postwar trial to restore moral order, just bland acceptance of overwhelming horror, which segues at the end to scenes of modern cleaning staff dusting and vacuuming the cremation furnaces as a museum exhibit. Brutal. VERDICT: As a political statement, it's acute and extremely timely; as a movie, it's best described as punishing — something you should see, but not something you'll want to revisit.

The end result is an audacious film, formally experimental and with an almost clinically detached point of view. Mainly shot on hidden cameras, it concentrates on the domestic life of the Höss family (Rudolf, his wife, Hedwig, and their five children), whose house stood just outside the perimeter of the concentration camp, the horror within suggested in glimpses of smoking chimneys but, more disturbingly, through an almost constant ambient soundscape of industrial noise and human shouts and cries. It is an unsettling film: a study in extreme cognitive dissonance. It stayed with me for weeks after I watched it, so much so that I attended another screening to try to decipher its uneasy merging of almost clinical observation and moments of abrupt and jarring experimentalism – the screen turns blood red at one point. On both occasions, it fulfilled Glazer’s aim “to make it a narrative that you, the viewer, complete, that you are involved in and ask questions of”. […]
[Glazer] first started thinking about The Zone of Interest when he read Martin Amis’s novel of the same name not long after its publication in 2014. Having secured the rights with his producer, Jim Wilson, the pair began what would become several years of intense and meticulous pre-production preparation. “Our reading actually took us away from the book and deep into Amis’s primary sources,” he says, “The more fragments of information we uncovered about Rudolf and Hedwig Höss in the Auschwitz archives, the more I realised that they were working-class people who were upwardly mobile. They aspired to become a bourgeois family in the way that many of us do today. That was what was so grotesque and striking about them – how familiar they were to us.”
[…] When he first visited Auschwitz, Glazer went to the Hösses’ house and, to his surprise, found it inhabited by a Polish family who had lived there since the end of the war. “I saw the remnants of the garden, and its proximity to the camp, and the wall, and it was chilling,” he says quietly. “Afterwards I entered the camp and looked at the wall from the other side, trying to imagine what the prisoners must have heard. There is no doubt that they would have heard happiness and gaiety as the Höss children laughed and splashed around in the pool. The film became about the proximity of the horror and the happiness, how one person’s paradise is another’s hell.”

rick sanchez x reader
headcannons or something idk i like old men read my stanford x readers here too x <- POLL AT THE END !!
Tumblr media
- you’re probably a family friend, you come over every once in a while to supervise morty and summer while jerry and beth try to rekindle their failing marriage
- you do a horrible job because the kids always end up sneaking out with their grandpa to kill some god or something absurd like that
- your oblivious, rick isn’t necessarily cold towards you, just indifferent
- he would rather be elsewhere than in the living room talking to some random person that beth insists on having in her house
- one day you catch them sneaking out and probably hide inside of the trunk of ricks car(?) because curiosity killed the cat or something like that
- the cars system would probably inform him that he has an unexpected visitor and your caught red handed, now inside the passenger seat with morty and his grandfather
- awkward would not be enough to describe what that whole journey was
- rick would berate you for being so stupid, telling you that you had no survival skills getting into strangers cars like that
- morty sat in silence, disappointed that he couldn’t go to “boob world” or whatever he called it
- you see, you’re a professional glazer
- it’s not even unintentional like you’re genuinely super impressed by this guy what the fuck do you mean he’s fucked a planet?? crazy work me next
- he decides to keep you around to stroke his ego, it’s refreshing to have someone who’s not always busting his balls about morality and space laws
- and having someone as attractive as you worship him like a god sounded good to him
- after a while he’ll definitely enjoy your company but pretend he’s super cool and suave , pretending that he’s not excited to spend some time with you
- morty gets a little concerned at the fact that his grandpa has taken a liking to you, with with beth
- they know what he’s like, he’s brash and cold one minute, and a little normal the next
- they eventually give in though, they’ve never seen him so calm before, maybe you’ll change him and his chaotic ways
- (you can’t and you won’t)
- he’s super distant when he realises he might have genuine feelings for you, it’s not like him at all to feel all mushy
- truth is, he’s lonely, he’s sad, he’s afraid that things won’t work out, something bad happens to you etc, then he’s back to being lonely
- yeah he’ll probably be a little mean to you at first, to try and scare you off
- doesn’t work, so he gives up with the sass
- definitely builds you little trinkets and machines now and then
- you have no time to mow the lawn? he’s going to build self mowing grass for you (it’s a little sad)
- always stuck in traffic? he’s tinkered with your car and now whenever you drive by a traffic light it’ll always be green (so many casualties)
- too cold today? he’s going to discreetly push the sun a little closer to the earth, juuust a smidge
- he definitely butt dials you when he’s drunk only to cry on your lap until he sobers up and then pretends nothing happened, if he tells you anything particularly sensitive then your memories about it are going bye-bye
- it would take a lot for him to confess, for real
- normally though you’ll probably find a bunch of voice mails from him, he sounds rough and panicky, like he’s about to die in some stupid mission (you could always near morty crying in the background)
- he’ll tell you that he loves you, and that you make him forget about how much he hates himself
- forget about that though because in the very next voice mail he sounds normal again and is telling you to ignore what the last message said
- do not ignore it pls
- do something subtle but nice, like bake or cook him something, or buy him a new lab coat, anything
- he’ll probably get the hint soon

Dear President Biden,
We come together as artists and advocates, but most importantly as human beings witnessing the devastating loss of lives and unfolding horrors in Israel and Palestine.
We ask that, as President of the United States, you call for an immediate de-escalation and ceasefire in Gaza and Israel before another life is lost. More than 5,000 people have been killed in the last week and a half – a number any person of conscience knows is catastrophic. We believe all life is sacred, no matter faith or ethnicity and we condemn the killing of Palestinian and Israeli civilians.
We urge your administration, and all world leaders, to honor all of the lives in the Holy Land and call for and facilitate a ceasefire without delay – an end to the bombing of Gaza, and the safe release of hostages. Half of Gaza’s two million residents are children, and more than two thirds are refugees and their descendants being forced to flee their homes. Humanitarian aid must be allowed to reach them.
We believe that the United States can play a vital diplomatic role in ending the suffering and we are adding our voices to those from the US Congress, UNICEF, Doctors without Borders, The International Committee of The Red Cross, and so many others. Saving lives is a moral imperative. To echo UNICEF, “Compassion — and international law — must prevail.”
As of this writing more than 6,000 bombs have been dropped on Gaza in the last 12 days — resulting in one child being killed every 15 minutes.
“Children and families in Gaza have practically run out of food, water, electricity, medicine and safe access to hospitals, following days of air strikes and cuts to all supply routes. Gaza’s sole power plant ran out of fuel Wednesday afternoon, shutting down electricity, water and wastewater treatment. Most residents can no longer get drinking water from service providers or household water through pipelines…. The humanitarian situation has reached lethal lows, and yet all reports point to further attacks. Compassion — and international law — must prevail.” – UNICEF spokesperson, James Elder
Beyond our pain and mourning for all of the people there and their loved ones around the world we are motivated by an unbending will to stand for our common humanity. We stand for freedom, justice, dignity and peace for all people – and a deep desire to stop more bloodshed.
We refuse to tell future generations the story of our silence, that we stood by and did nothing. As Emergency Relief Chief Martin Griffiths told UN News, “History is watching.”

That "racism of low expectations" point can be applied to more than Westerners patting their little Jihad Meow Meows on the head by the way. I think it also applies to American Jews, usually assimilated, acting like Israel is this Entity and not a country made up of mostly Middle Eastern Jews, people. When they do acknowledge that Israelis are people who aren't just acting in the interests of an all powerful governmental animus, they act like all Israelis are bloodthirsty frat bro soldiers wreaking havoc in Gaza because they think it's fun.
Tumblr media
Because what is this? This tweet was in response to the chaotic backlash against Jonathan Glazer, who espoused a nearly identical sentiment. That sentiment being: Israel is using our Jewishness for some nefarious political purpose. It's not fair! We didn't sign off on GENOCIDE! How dare they use us to do this!
Israeli Jews are seen too unenlightened, too religious, too much of an embarrassment, to much of Diaspora Jewry. And yet at the same time their Jewishness is not even considered to be part of the political calculus of Israel at all? These not in my name types truly think Israel is a shadowy cabal of like 20 old white men (ironic) getting off on destroying lives and using as shields these poor innocent Americans and Brits, famously two peoples who've never twisted or corrupted the legacy of the Holocaust before.
They obviously have very hurt feelings that Israeli Jews dare to be Jews, to invoke their own Jewishness, Jewish values, to justify military action. They're not even really doing that? They want the hostages back. That is the primary concern if you poll Israeli citizens right now. And that's been the case pretty much every day since the pogrom. That's it. That's why they're saying Never Again. If that offends you as a Jewish person really let that steep. Really sit with your emotional reaction to Jews having a trauma reaction to traumatizing events and relating other events of Jewish trauma throughout history to that event. Ask yourself if it's appropriate to insinuate that they're using their Jewishness, sorry just YOUR Jewishness apparently, to make you look bad?
Israeli politicians have invoked the Holocaust outright, as a comparison. Because clearly the country whose "white" population is mostly made up of the descendants of Holocaust refugees has no business doing that? That's an affront to your name and your values?Again, why do you think everything is about you? Why do you think everything Israel does is even in your name in the first place? Is it American Brainrot Disease again?
You think Israeli Jews are so incapable of rationality and of yearning for social justice (they just want their family members back) that you erase them from the conversation. Israeli leftists are not real and are not working with Palestinians as we speak, and certainly aren't advocating for a ceasefire more successfully than anyone on this continent! Israeli politicians who speak to their constituents and use the shared cultural language of being Jews are trying to brainwash and influence Americans, because they have no constituents. Israel is just a bunch of racist politicians and a mercenary army that's trained to kill children specifically.
Like this is getting so annoying. It's clear they wish they could just excommunicate all Israelis, because they're Bad Jews. They want to take away their Jewish card, because that's not what Real Judaism stands for! And then they get offended when non secular Jews around the world dare question their Jewish identities in response to this behavior. Which I'm not condoning for the record, but how about you practice what you preach for once?

The families of two men who were fatally shot by Winnipeg police within weeks of each other want a joint inquest to examine their deaths together, their lawyers say.
Lawyers for the families of Afolabi Opaso, 19, and Bradley Singer, 59, held a press conference in Winnipeg on Friday to call for a joint inquest and for the province to introduce support services for families who've lost loved ones to police violence.
Martin Glazer, the lawyer representing Singer's brother, Gerry, says Manitoba's Fatality Inquiries Act requires an inquest if it's believed a person died as a result of use of force by police.
But he says the act also allows the chief medical examiner to request a single inquest into two or more deaths if their circumstances are similar enough that separate inquiries are not needed.
"The two shooting deaths by the Winnipeg police, in this case, bear similarities," said Glazer. "Not only do they involve the same police force, but in both cases, the men killed were mentally ill." [...]

for ted lasso fans who aren't football fans, the akufo league subplot was pretty directly inspired by the april 2021 announcement of a proposed european super league founded by 12 of the richest clubs in europe competing in a closed group against each other plus 8 other teams tba.
the enterprise was cancelled very quickly after its announcement, but the differences between how that played out in ted lasso and the story as it played out in real life are.....hmmmm interesting choices to say the least.
the esl wasn't proposed by a cartoonishly villainous ghanaian billionaire. it was launched by a c-suite of white european and united states billionaire businessmen/team owners. - real madrid president florentino pérez spearheaded the proposal and claimed CEO position with andrea agnelli (owner of juventus), joel glazer (owner of man u), john henry (owner of liverpool), and stan kroenke (owner of arsenal) making up the rest of the proposed executive board. -these five are worth $2.3B, $13.5B (agnelli family), $4.8 (glazer family), $4B, and $12.9B, for a total of 37.5 billion dollars.
the esl proposal was formally announced on 18 april 2021 and by 21 april all 6 epl founding clubs had publicly announced their planned withdrawal from the league. this wasn't because of a rich white lady giving a heartwarming speech to a room of other rich people, it was because of a mass movement of working class fans denouncing the move as the capitalist greed and exploitation that it was, with some calling for fan ownership of clubs entirely:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i get using real events as inspiration and adapting them to fit a narrative purpose within the story, but i think it's worth it to know what the story line was based on, especially considering the specific racial and class changes that were made reframing the villains and heroes of this particular story.

Recently Viewed: The Zone of Interest
Tumblr media
The Zone of Interest is a horror film.
That isn’t a “genre” classification, by the way; the movie lacks the “traditional” tropes and conventions commonly associated with the most narrow, stringent application of that (often reductive) label, which tends to conjure images of ghosts, ghouls, and machete-wielding maniacs. Still, the intent of the story is to terrify the audience—it simply accomplishes this goal through subtler means than, say, Friday the 13th or The Evil Dead. There is, for example, little explicit bloodshed; the atrocities occur almost entirely offscreen. Yet “implication” doesn’t dull the impact of the violence; on the contrary, it somehow feels more confrontational (albeit less exploitative) than outright showing mass graves and gallons of gore.
The narrative revolves around a series of chilling juxtapositions. Seemingly ordinary family meals and joyful birthday celebrations, for instance, are lent a sinister tone by virtue of the fact that the patriarch wears the uniform of a high-ranking SS officer. The mother, meanwhile, tends her garden, taking great pride in the colorful, fragrant flowers and bountiful vegetables; she then casually mentions that she hopes her plants and crops will eventually obscure the drab, dreary concrete wall at the rear of the property—a barrier that borders Auschwitz. Indeed, the protagonists literally live in the shadow of the notorious death camp. They dress themselves in clothing and jewelry confiscated from the Jewish prisoners; the eldest son has even made a hobby of collecting discarded gold teeth and dental plates. At night, the father stands on the back porch, enjoying a cigar as he watches the black smoke billowing above the crematorium chimneys—the perverse epitome of a professional admiring a “job well done.” The household servants—local girls hired from the nearby village—dutifully clear the silverware, scrub the floors, and polish the master’s boots, constantly tormented by the knowledge that their very survival depends upon the “benevolence” of their employers.
Tumblr media
Director Jonathan Glazer observes the action with an unnervingly cold detachment. The predominantly static camera and rigidly symmetrical framing are reminiscent of the works of Roy Andersson and Chantal Akerman. This deliberately mundane, undramatic visual style emphasizes the inherent humanity of the subjects: they’re Nazis, yes, but they’re also people—a somewhat clichéd theme that nevertheless remains relevant and resonant. Anybody, after all, is capable of choosing evil; we must therefore be vigilant, lest we become history’s next monster.
Thus, The Zone of Interest is objective in its presentation, but not nonjudgmental. And that is a vital distinction.
